Read any publication or browse social media for a few minutes and you are inundated with anticipated trends for everything from fashion to investing and even graphic design.Design trends can be exciting in the moment, and it can be easy to get swept up in the hype. A new font is released, a color palette suddenly becomes all the rage, or a website animation style pops up on a competitor’s website. So, should those in the investment world chase design trends? We believe design decisions should balance new capabilities and trends with solid design principles. Not every design trend is worth following, especially for those in the investment industry. Your brand identity is essential in fostering trust, loyalty, and professionalism. It reinforces your expertise and role as a steadfast financial partner. It’s not something that should change based on a trend or fad. As we’ve blogged about, the start of a new year is the perfect time to work with your creative team or agency to assess the overall health of your brand identity. During those conversations, remember to balance interest in what looks good now with creating a strong brand that can stand the test of time. Trends are usually temporary. Good design will never go out of style. Design for the investment world should balance new capabilities and design rooted in fundamental best practices. Design experts, like the team here at Emerson Ward, can guide you through the options and opportunities to help you determine what’s best for your firm. January 24, 2023Assessing Website AccessibilityAccessibility standards improve websites for everyone while delivering significant business benefits. We recently shared our perspective on the importance of these standards for hedge funds and other asset management firms. Being inclusive in website design choices is critical for firms of all shapes and sizes. While it is easier to do while building a new site, it is also something you can accomplish over time as you update existing content. Here are some of the elements we think about when designing a site using an “accessibility-first” approach. These are great places to start when thinking about your website design plan or to help you shape your next content update. Images: Alt tags: Adding alt tags to images and illustrations help people using screen readers or braille output devices. Alt tags should be used for all key images (i.e. not background textures) and be descriptive yet simple. Examples: “Diagram illustrating the 7 steps of our due diligence process” or “Woman presenting to people around a table.”Links: Link text should describe where the link is linking to. For example: “Download the PDF” is better than “click here.”Fonts: Font size and type is critical to accessibility. Make sure your site doesn’t use fonts that are too small and avoid using scripts or detailed fonts that are difficult to read.Headings: Use headings (H1-H6) to create an outline of the page. They help non-visual users understand how the page is organized (main topics vs, sub-topics) and make it easy for screen reader users to navigate. Videos: It’s considered best practice to include closed captioning on all videos and to make sure users can pause them if needed. The pause function is also important for animations. Providing video transcripts is also a great way to reach the broadest possible audience with your videos.Color: Foreground and background colors need adequate contrast/saturation to be legible. This is important with text color, particularly if it is going across an image. Forms: Use the HTML label element so screen reader users will know which labels or prompts are associated with which form fields.Icons & buttons: Icons with or without borders must be legible and have contrast. People can’t click a button they can’t see.Website accessibility isn’t something that you set and forget about. There is always room for improvement and new technologies that can help. For example, there are widgets you can install on your website that can automate the accessibility for visitors (our favorite is accessiBe), giving you time to improve the code and functionality of your site. If you are still unsure of where to start, run a free assessment tool on your current site. Then, put a plan in place to improve your score. Your creative services team or agency can help with the plan and implementation. Want to be notified when it’s available? Sign up below:NameFirmEmail AddressThank you! February 10, 2023Color & Asset Management Marketing MaterialsColors evoke different meanings, connotations, and emotional reactions in people. While these reactions and meanings vary across cultures, one thing never varies — color is powerful. And your firm’s marketing materials are not immune. Selecting the right color palette is essential for expressing your firm’s perspective.Research shows that people make a subconscious judgment about a person, environment, or product within 90 seconds of initial viewing and that between 62% and 90% of that assessment is based on color alone.*With so much influence at stake and complexity (brand color palettes should have 10 colors), consulting a design agency or professional to set or change a brand’s color palette is essential. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need a basic understand of the impact and importance of color. We caught up with two of our senior design experts to chat about the importance of color in hedge fund materials, some popular misconceptions and current trends. Q. There’s a common belief that red should be avoided at all costs in designs for anyone in finance. Is that true?A. In finance, there’s a widespread perception that reds symbolize loss and should be avoided. That said, many successful financial firms like UBS and HSBC effectively use red in their branding. In general, red attracts the most attention and signifies power, strength, passion, and energy so it should not be overlooked. Q. Are there any color considerations that financial services firms need to take into account more than other industries?A. Yes – contrast. Given the high number of graphs and charts used in hedge fund or asset management communications, ensuring your color palette has enough contrast between colors is key. You don’t want a pie chart with 8 sectors all in subtle shades of grey, making it impossible to see where one ends and the other begins. Contrast also helps readers who are colorblind navigate materials.Q. You mentioned colorblindness, is that something firms should take into consideration when creating marketing materials?A. Yes! You can help readers who are colorblind navigate your materials by ensuring proper color contrast. There are plenty of free tools that can check contrast for you. Q. What’s the most popular color trend you are seeing right now? A. With the importance of ESG in the asset management we are seeing firms staring to use green as one of their primary colors a lot more than even just two years ago. Given how connected green is to money and nature in color psychology this isn’t surprising.Q. What color do you wish firms would use more often?A. Purple and yellow — but not together! Purple is very versatile and works well with many secondary colors. Yellow is also a great accent color. It is “safer” than orange and works well with dark backgrounds.Q. What colors are popular right now?A. Orange is becoming very popular now, especially as a secondary color. From a psychology perspective it combines the energy of red with the happiness of yellow. It is great at grabbing attention making it ideal for call-to-action activities in marketing. Q. Is grey overused?A. Not as a supporting/secondary color! Grey is very versatile and can be very useful to help your main brand colors stand out. From a color psychology perspective is connotates balance and neutrality, which for a hedge fund is a powerful message to convey.Q. What’s the most common mistake you see firms make with color?A. Too many colors in one place all competing for attention. While every good color palette should have multiple colors (typically 2-3 primary colors and the rest secondary), that doesn’t mean you should use them all at the same time in the same place. Rarer, but just as bad in our opinion is not enough color being used. In the end, its best to follow the color hierarchy your design team set up for your brand.Q. What color advice would you give for a firm looking to stand out from the crowd but nervous about being too bold?A. There’s nothing wrong with sticking to the more traditional blues and green that are common in our industry (blue is the top color choice in the US at 35%, green comes in second at 16%)**.If you want to include something unexpected or more attention grabbing, go for a complimentary color to accent it. Bold complimentary color choices can change the tone of a design and help you stand out. Q. For firms that are printing materials to send out to clients, are there any special considerations when it comes to color?A. August 24, 2023Color Blindness and Designing Asset Management Content There are 300 million color blind people globally. It is estimated that 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women have the condition. That might seem like a small group of people to consider when designing your asset management content. But it’s not.For every 100 people that view your website, read a quarterly report, or review your pitch deck, 8 or more may be experiencing the content differently than you’ve anticipated. If your results and messages aren’t being communicated in a way that everyone can understand and absorb, that could have negative consequences for your firm. What Is Color blindness?Color blindness or color vision deficiency is the inability to distinguish certain shades of color. The most common type of color blindness is red-green, where people mix up all colors that have red or green as part of the whole color. People with this type of color vision deficiency are often surprised to learn that peanut butter is not green.Blue-yellow color vision deficiency makes it hard to tell the difference between multiple colors including shades of yellow and blue. Both red-green and blue-yellow deficiencies have multiple sub-types. Finally, there is complete color blindness which is very rare. People with this condition typically see things in black and white or shades of grey only. The image on the left are the colors a person with normal vision may see when looking at a rainbow. The block on the right is how the same colors are perceived by someone with red-green color deficiency. Designing TipsWhile it may seem daunting to select a brand palette with such a broad spectrum of color blindness in mind, good design choices are the place to start. Designing for accessibility doesn’t sacrifice aesthetic integrity of your design. In fact, the design practices that support colorblind users also happen to be good general design practices. It is best to consult a professional when making major color and design decisions. For everyday use, here are a few simple tips to ensure your content appears as intended for all users:Texture: Use texture, as opposed to multiple colors for elements that require emphasis. This is particularly useful for charts and graphs. A contrasting pattern in a bar chart will be easier to perceive than different shades of green. For graphs, consider using a mix of dashed lines and lines with various stroke thicknesses.Outlines and Labels: When working with charts and graphs add an outline or spacings around chart elements to distinguish one element from the other. Direct labels in graphs and charts as opposed to legends that rely on color are also helpful.Symbols: Avoid using color alone to convey a message. Symbols or other visual cues are also important. For example, an online form that changes text color to red when information is not entered correctly will not be distinguishable for a colorblind user. Instead make sure a symbol such as an “!” is included. Color Palette: Selecting an appropriate color palette for your brand is the best way to help people with color vision deficiency navigate your content. Because color blindness affects people in different ways, it is hard to simply identify a list of “safe” colors to use. There are however a few color combinations that can make things more difficult for people with color blindness including: green and red, green and brown, blue and purple and light green and yellow. If your brand palette includes a combination of these colors, ensure that the contrast used in your content is appropriate. Here is an example of how a brand color palette looks to people with various forms of color blindness. Notice how it works for most types of color blindness but appears significantly different.Normal VisionTritanomalyProtanomalyDeuteranomalyMonochromacyResourcesFor significant color decisions or high-traffic collateral, it is always best to consult your design team for recommendations. Color blindness is one of the many considerations your creative services partners will keep in mind when recommending a brand palette or design choices for brand materials. Be ruthless with the volume of information in the presentation—if it’s not necessary, delete it. Spread data/content across multiple slides to make it easier to understand—rarely will one additional slide ruin a presentation. Remember you can deliver messages/ideas in words, numbers, AND design elements, use both to your advantage. If these editing efforts aren’t enough, you may have to include a complex slide (or two). Then the second rule for designing data-heavy slides applies—keep it clean and simple. Here are a few tips to help:Use a Sans Serif font: Sans Serif fonts are easier to read even with very small sizes. Speaking of which, if you are sending a slide to a client try to avoid fonts smaller than 8-point type size (and only for non-essential information). That size is impossible to read for slides being presented but can still be legible on personal screens or printed.Limit colors: Less is more when it comes to colors and design. If you have multiple tables (or even just one long table), you don’t want anything that pulls the eye away from the data. Use 1-2 colors and if necessary, a shade of one of them. Keep your design choices simple so you don’t contribute to the chaos of a busy slide.Edit graph lines: Did you know that the default PowerPoint settings add lines, tick marks, and other unnecessary “chart junk” to graphs to aid with comprehension? For many graphs, these additions only complicate things. Try taking out Leader Lines, Grid Lines, and Minor Axis Lines. This should simplify your design and as a result, make it easier to understand.Be consistent: The only thing worse than one data-heavy slide is multiple data-heavy slides. If that’s the challenge you are dealing with, consistent design across all slides is key. Use the same placement and design treatment for the same types of information throughout the presentation. For example, if you have 5-year performance data for multiple funds on different slides, make sure it is in the same location and in the same color, font, and size. Remember, when in doubt spread your information across multiple slides to improve comprehension. If you are stuck, reach out to your creative partner for more ideas on how to ensure your messages don’t get lost in data-rich slides.Want to be notified when it’s available? May 23, 2023Designing for ESGDetermining the visual identity for your ESG strategy and progress takes careful planning and thought. It can’t be an afterthought, nor can it be a simple addition of more greens and blues in your color palette.ESG is a broad category that can be brought to life in many ways – through a firm’s investment strategy and portfolio, their work in the community, public advocacy, or even internal policies. Deciding how best to share that is a careful process that starts with what your firm believes, how that manifests in your actions and then determining what parts of that strategy you want to demonstrate to clients and prospects. One of our favorite design challenges is helping a company visualize their ESG strategy. From annual ESG reports to websites we’ve helped countless firms tell their ESG story. Here are a few trends we are seeing in ESG design and how you could adapt them for your firm.People at the Forefront. Toss those data-heavy slides away, effective ESG designs have a friendlier look than traditional corporate topics. A simple way to achieve this look is by using imagery that includes people. Including pictures of people engaged in ESG activities (beach clean-up, community service work etc…) is popular right now. If you prefer not to showcase your team or specific people, use imagery that denotes a person’s involvement.Focus on Nature. For imagery, it’s hard to go wrong with the natural beauty of our planet. While we are seeing a lot of forest, tree, mountain, and water imagery, that may not be right for your firm’s brand identity. Be creative, adapt imagery to reflect your brand’s perspective. Filters over images and different angles, or perspectives (we love a good close-up shot) are great places to start. Any Color Goes. While the environment is just one component of an ESG story, it is a great place to start in terms of color palettes. Fresh, natural colors like green and blues are popular, but not the only options. We are starting to see more creativity when it comes to shades of white, taupe, and yellow. But that is just part of the ESG color story. For firms who’s ESG strategy focuses more on people, social programs and community service, a more vibrant color palette can work well. It is exciting to see firms moving towards colors that capture the vibrancy and energy of their ESG efforts. Not only is it appropriate for the subject, but it can also help your firm’s content stand out from competitors.Demonstrate Your Progress. Integrity and transparency are essential when reporting your ESG efforts. Including images of current certifications, logos of organizations you are working with, pictures of your activities or awards you’ve won demonstrates your commitment to ESG. We’re starting to see firms do this more often and it’s making a positive impact. Regardless of how you are communicating, ensure that these images are updated appropriately to reflect your ongoing efforts.Keep it Simple. Regardless of the type of ESG story your firm is telling, an important and popular design choice is keeping things simple. Clean, uncluttered design with lots of white space so your content can breathe is proving very effective in designing around ESG topics. Icons and other simple visuals are popular provided they do not detract from the main message or concept a firm is trying to communicate. Likewise, infographics or simple interactivity for digital content, makes your message easier to understand and more approachable. For an industry that thrives on tables of numbers, ESG is a great opportunity to simplify design and the volume of content being presented.Want to be notified when it’s available? January 30, 2024Five Design Questions to Ask for the New YearThe start of a new year is a great time to do a quick check up on your firm’s visual and digital identity. Here are five questions we recommend asking at least once a year.Refresh: When was the last time you reviewed/refreshed your firm’s brand identity? If the answer is any longer than 5 years ago, or you’ve had a significant change in business strategy, leadership, or growth, then it’s time to add that to the 2024 to do list. More on brand refreshes.Take Stock: Has it been more than a year since you updated the stock imagery your firm uses? If the answer is yes, it’s time for an update. You may not need a complete overhaul but getting a few new images (and retiring some over-used ones) will help keep your audience engaged. Here are our tips for how to select engaging stock images.Accessibility: How accessible is your website? What about your PDFs? Accessibility standards and the technologies available to help ensure compliance are evolving. Staying up to date across digital assets and properties is a must for any business, including asset management firms. Besides, ensuring everyone can access the information about and from your firm is good business sense. We shared our advice on getting started with accessibility.Strategic SEO: Does your firm have an SEO strategy in place and when was the last time you it was reviewed? With last year’s big update from Google (Read More Here) it is more important than ever to ensure your website is set up for results. Regularly reviewing your keywords and supporting content strategy is essential in reaching prospective clients.Slide Success: When was the last time you reviewed your pitch deck or factsheet template? Are you sure your perspective and what makes you different stands out for clients and prospects amid all that data? Slides have a funny way of straying from the original template or design, typically to include more content. The beginning of the year is a great time to review how your slides look “in real-life” and make any adjustments to ensure they still reflect your brand and visual identity. Read more.If you need help making sure your brand is ready for a successful 2024 reach out to your creative services agency or team. We are here to help move beyond these questions and help your firm stand out from a crowd with compelling branding and identity.Want to be notified when it’s available? November 30, 2022Good Design Gone BadHave you ever seen a print advertisement or sign and wondered what were they thinking? As design experts, this happens to us almost every day. While we also see plenty of beautiful design work, we’ve found that behind many bad designs is a good idea that failed in the execution phase. The culprit is usually a lack of restraint. Just like putting on too many accessories can overwhelm a great suit, too many edits and design features can ruin compelling content. Since asset management firms are often communicating complex ideas and numbers, it’s important that the design doesn’t make the information hard to process. Restraint in document design and creation can be incredibly difficult. To help, we’ve outlined three common misconceptions and how to keep a good design from going bad.Misconception: The idea that the more you highlight something the more it will stand out. When it comes to designs that help readers understand information while reinforcing the main messages you want to communicate there are two important rules to remember. Less is more and consistency is critical. How good design can go bad:Multiple graphic styles in one piece of content: Keep it consistent, do not mix styles such as illustrations and photography in the same piece of content.Multiple effects on a slide: Just because you can add an effect doesn’t mean you should. Too many effects make it harder for people to process the information. There’s no need to use drop shadow, border, and beveling on one text box on a slide. Pick one or two across the entire presentation. Use them consistently based on the type of information you are sharing.Overdone images: Too much of anything isn’t good and images are no exception. Overly designed graphics can become tacky quickly. Keep it simple and timeless, avoid anything artsy. Not sure if your image is overdone? Usually, if you have to ask there’s likely a problem. But if you aren’t sure try taking one or two elements away and seeing if it still communicates your message.Misconception: Getting as much information as possible on a page/slide is essential.Effectively communicating an idea or set of messages requires two things -- clarity of content/idea and repetition. Packing slides or documents with details and explanations make it challenging for readers to understand what’s important and process it. How good design can go bad:Too big and too small: Images or words that are too big are a distraction and too small are ignored. Your logo doesn’t need to be the focal point on every slide or page. It should be there to quietly reinforce your brand, not dominate what people remember when they think about your content. Likewise, anything smaller than 10 point font won’t be legible on a slide or 8 point in a document.Lack of white space: Negative space or white space on a slide or document is essential in helping readers process the information. Don’t cram another text box on a slide, simply because you can squeeze it in. Adding another slide or page will be more effective for your audience and ensure a cleaner design.Too much text: When you aren’t there to present or review a document with a client it can be easy to want to add everything possible to a document. Unfortunately, the more you add the more difficult it is to make an impact. Instead, focus on 3-5 key messages. Ensure they are communicated clearly and repeated across the document in text and through design. Delete everything else. It’s better to get a follow-up question than to not communicate what makes your firm unique.Misconception: Good design is easy to do.Effective and beautiful design is hard. It takes expertise, a creative eye, and careful thought. While understanding the basic principles of design can help ensure that you don’t take a design from good to bad by editing, it doesn’t mean you can develop one without assistance. That’s why we always recommend having a designer on the team. Whether it’s a full-time team or a creative services agency you engage on a project basis, having that expertise will help ensure your collateral is compelling, effective, and visually stunning.Want to be notified when it’s available? November 10, 2022Google’s Helpful Content Update and Your Firm’s Website Google recently introduced an update called "Helpful Content". It is designed to prioritize content that helps the reader achieve a specific goal. Regardless of the size of your firm if you have a website, you need to pay attention to this update and any changes it may have on your search ranking. What Changed? The helpful content update is a broad algorithm update that impacts Google’s search indexing. It is designed to promote content that is helpful and informative while demoting content that is inaccurate or unhelpful. How Does It Work? The update considers factors such as whether users click through to your website after seeing your result on the search results page, and how long they stay on your website once they arrive. Tips for Making Your Content More Helpful In general, website content that has been written for people instead of search algorithms or SEO rules shouldn’t be impacted by this new update. However, any time there is a major change in how search algorithms work, it’s a good idea to review your content. Here are a few tips to assess your content’s helpfulness:Make sure your content is well-researched accurate and up-to-date. Spelling mistakes and incorrect or outdated information will have a negative impact.Stay focused on your expertise. Make sure your content is focused on your firm, services, and people. This counts for blogs as well. Google rewards content where visitors feel they’ve found what they are looking for. If you have any forms or actions visitors need to take on your site, make sure you include clear step-by-step instructions. Lists and bullet points are great for this. Include images and videos to help illustrate your key points. People are more likely to engage with content that is visual as well as text-based. The more people engage with your content, the more Google will consider it helpful.Use keyword research to find out what people are searching for when they need your services. This will help you create content that is more likely to be clicked on in research results.Since this update was just rolled out, the effects are still being studied and analyzed. However, it will have a major impact on search results going forward. After all, people can’t find your firm’s website if you don’t show up in the search results or if you show up on page 20 instead of page 2. Our advice? Take the time now to make sure your content is as helpful as possible and avoid any drop in traffic or search results rankings. November 3, 2022How Brand Differentiation Can Attract New ClientsWhen it comes to attracting new clients, numbers play a small part in the big picture. While that may sound counterintuitive, consider that everyone in this industry can put up numbers. They are in many ways the bare minimum needed to be a viable option. We believe the key to attracting new prospects and clients lies in your ability to differentiate your brand. There are a lot of firms and consultants vying for attention today. Attracting new clients in this crowded field involves two broad steps – getting noticed and telling your unique story. While both steps are essential, they are also intertwined. The better you differentiate your story, the easier it is to get noticed. The key to differentiating your brand lies in a simple question – what makes your firm unique? Answering this question clearly and completely and carrying those ideas through everything you do is how you build a differentiated brand. For example, if ESG is core to your strategy, make sure you talk about why it matters to the firm, how that reinforces your mission/vision and what it means for the future of your firm. Unsure of the answer? That’s okay, telling your firm’s story is tough to do right. Here are a few additional questions to get you thinking:How is your approach unique? What gives you unique insights into your strategy? How has your experience shaped how you look at the companies you invest in?What’s the human element of your strategy? Now that you can articulate what makes your firm unique, it is time to get noticed. This is where your visual brand strategy comes into play. How do you reflect the answer to that question into your brand’s look and feel? Are the same shades of blue and grey coupled with images of cityscapes and bridges that are so common in our industry a true reflection of your message? Chances are the answer is no – and that’s a good thing! One of the biggest mistakes we see in the industry is everyone trying to fit into the expected mold. You could have a truly differentiated story, but if your imagery, colors, and fonts blend in with the crowd, your message may not cut through the noise. Don’t be afraid of color. Be bold. Keep it professional, easy to consume, and avoid the expected. The best advice we can give is to create a brand for your firm that reflects your strategy and story, not what everyone else is doing.Want to be notified when it’s available? August 15, 2022How to know it’s time for a brand re-design for hedge funds and other asset management firmsWhen should an asset management firm’s website design, logo or overall brand identity be updated? Is there a standard time to update the look of your hedge fund’s pitch book? What trends are you seeing out there? We get asked these questions all the time. The truth is, everyone struggles with them, and for good reason. Your brand identity is tied closely to business growth and success. But too much change can cause confusion and not enough attention can give your competitors a leg up. The answers are unique to each firm and require careful thought. Like most things in marketing and branding, the decision to do an update/refresh is part science and part art. To help you figure out the right answer for your firm, here are a few of the triggers that launched redesign efforts for our clients.Newness: If you are launching a new fund or strategy or gearing up for fundraising efforts, it’s the perfect time to refresh or update your brand identity. Your visual presence speaks volumes about your organization. Launching something new is the perfect opportunity to re-introduce yourself with an updated look. Significant Changes: Management and ownership changes are another great time to stop and think about how you are portraying your firm or fund. If what you are doing or how you are doing it changes significantly, your visual identity should as well. Change gives you the opportunity to build on your past with a fresh, purposeful, and future focused brand identity. Milestone Growth: Often, the natural growth of your business can trigger an update. When a fund is starting out, there is less expectation that you’ll have a flashy, fully built-out website. Generally, when you hit an AUM of $500 million to $1 billion (or more) it’s time to get your marketing and digital identity in order.Time: You probably wouldn’t wear a 20-year-old suit to an in-person meeting. Make sure you aren’t relying on an outdated look for your brand either. If none of the above triggers apply to your firm, make sure you aren’t letting your identity grow stale, expected or boring. Every 5-6 years, it’s worth evaluating your visual identity including logo, website design, presentation templates and other marketing materials to ensure they are still fresh and captivating for today’s audiences. Technical Advances: This is closely aligned to time, because let’s face it, technology changes faster than most firms can keep up with. Unless you launched your website last week, chances are there’s new technology or practices that could significantly improve your site. The industry standard is analyzing your website content and performance every five years. And don’t forget to ensure you are doing regular yearly maintenance (minor technical updates, simple content changes) in between those major updates. If you are still struggling with knowing whether it’s time for a refresh, trust your gut. If you think something isn’t working well or doesn’t look quite right, it may be time to talk with a creative services agency.Want to be notified when it’s available? April 12, 2023How to Select Engaging Stock ImagesImagery plays a major role in setting the tone for your brand and collateral. It can be calming, lend credibility, inspire confidence, and help your firm stand out. Or it can do the exact opposite. When selected correctly, stock images can reinforce your main messages and indirectly convey a feeling or theme about your firm. Bad imagery selection betrays a lack of original thinking and creativity. This can make it harder to build trust and create a positive brand impression and identity. For asset management firms, subtle differences in imagery can have big consequences. Selecting stock imagery for a presentation, website, or other collateral should be done with careful thought. It takes time and sometimes several variations to select the best imagery for your brand. Here are a few tips to consider:Avoid clichés: Visual cliches (the handshake, the bridge, the globe) exist. And just like written or spoken cliches, they portray a lack of original thought and can be misunderstood. Does the handshake signify partnership, new business, an introduction, a goodbye, or congratulations? Instead, select an image that evokes the specific feeling or idea you are trying to convey. For example, if you want to showcase team collaboration, try images that highlight people working together in a business setting from a unique angle or vantage point.Be unique: City skylines, bridges, and mountains are examples of imagery that is overused in asset management. If you can’t avoid picking one of these images, make sure you find a way to have it stand out. Instead, of the traditional mountain top image, try one at dawn or a non-traditional shot or something that is more abstract.Avoid the “grip and grin”: Select stock photos that don’t look like stock photos. When using images of people, avoid the ones of people standing and smiling directly into the camera. Instead use an image that shows activity, conveys a story or idea, and is less staged.Use professional images: Make sure the image you are using is of the appropriate resolution and has been cropped correctly. Something as simple as the quality of an image can speak volumes about your firm, and standards. Don’t forget to have the appropriate permissions to use and edit the image.Avoid Ambiguity: Make sure the image is easy to understand and evokes a clear feeling, emotion, and idea. What is the image on the left? Dead grass, a poorly maintained golf course? It doesn’t evoke any clear feelings (other than confusion). In contrast, the image on the right immediately conveys a sense of calm, memories of the smell of the ocean or the feeling of the breeze likely come to mind.Use color carefully: Select images that have colors that compliment your brand palette. You also want to use them consistently across collateral types. If your dominant colors are blue and green, selecting images that are black and white with create a feeling of disconnection and unease. The images below aren’t necessarily bad options if they fit in with your brand color palette. Bonus tip: It is important to also use tone consistently and in harmony with your message. The tones in these images convey very different feelings. The one on the left evokes a moody, mysterious tone. The other is upward facing and bright.Want to be notified when it’s available? May 21, 2024It’s Time to Talk About TemplatesLet’s talk about templates. Design templates to be specific. In today’s digital era, there is a proliferation of sites that help you create everything from slides to brochures, logos, and documents all with the click (or two) of a button. These mass market sites hold the promise of efficiency and professional aesthetics at a fraction of the cost of professional design. What could possibly be wrong with saving time and money for a quick design project? As it turns out, plenty. From damage to your firm reputation and creating confusion around your brand identity to sacrificing originality or failing to stand out in a crowded market, there are many pitfalls to design by template. The pre-designed layouts offered by these tools are typically developed by professional graphic artists. They are eye-catching on screen and seem like the perfect shortcut and budget saver for a quick project. And many of them are good, if you don’t change anything. Simple changes such as a headline with fewer characters, swapping out a color, adding more text or a photo with a different orientation mean that your document has lost its finely tuned professional look. Can your firm afford to have less than professional looking materials in front of clients? Well-designed communications keep clients and prospects focused on the content and message. Even minor design flaws distract and make the content harder to consume. Design templates can also result in cookie-cutter solutions that fail to capture the essence of your firm’s brand identity. While they offer a variety of colors, fonts and layouts, they are ultimately constrained by pre-defined parameters. The exact shade of green in your color palette or the unique font associated with your brand matter. Building brand awareness and creating a feeling of trust and dependability requires consistency in how your brand appears. If creativity or standing out in a crowd is your goal, then templates are enemy number one. The minimal customization and repetitive nature of templates (when the same idea is delivered in multiple iterations), lends itself to a feeling of sameness. It also increases the potential of duplication by competitors. How would you feel if your competitor used the same template for a pitchbook? Would your document land the same way with a client if their child’s school had recently used it?Our take is that mass market templates have no place in asset management collateral. Leave the templates to resumes and community bake sales. Instead, work with your creative team or agency to develop materials that are unique to your firm, designed appropriately for the content and reflect your unique brand and identity.Want to be notified when it’s available? April 1, 2023Lucky Number 7On April 1st, Emerson Ward celebrated our 7th Anniversary! What started off as a simple idea to bring to high-quality, knowledgeable design to the asset management ecosystem has grown beyond our expectations. In many cultures, 7 is considered a lucky or important number. For us it’s both. We feel lucky to have been able to meet, collaborate and support some of the best firms, thinkers, innovators, and creators in the industry. We have also been lucky to meet and work with people outside of our industry focus that have pushed us to work on exciting new topics. Seven is also an important number for us. Our seventh year is starting with our biggest team ever, a new office space, new services, and dreams for even bigger things to come.To kick off the celebration (there are rumors of cake at the office), we caught up with Founder and Creative Director Brian Ward to hear his thoughts on turning lucky number 7.Q. Copper and wool are the traditional seventh anniversary gifts. What is the most important gift (literal or figurative) Emerson Ward has received over the years? A. Good question – and an easy one. Without a doubt it’s the team here at Emerson Ward. We couldn’t do what we do without the incredible efforts of our amazing employees, who tackle everything we throw at them with grace and tenacity. They never shy away from a challenge, have helped build lasting relationships with our clients, and work hard every day to ensure we continue to deliver a high-level of service. Q. You’ve successfully navigated growth of a small business during some very uncertain times. What was the biggest factor in your success? A. It’s been challenging to say the least. Everyone has their COVID story - ours starts with the official opening of our first office on March 17th, 2020. Two days later, stay-at-home orders were issued by the state and like everyone else, we were sent home to figure how to manage kids, work, our growing client roster (all while our shiny new office sat empty), and the new reality that we’ve found ourselves in ever since. I think our success over that time really boils down to the fact that we truly understand the pain points our clients face every day – updating your pitch books is challenging, maintaining a slide library is challenging, managing a website, when managing a portfolio is your #1 priority, is very challenging. Hiring us or another agency to design your brand or build a website is one thing, but having a good, knowledgeable creative partner that doesn’t shy away from the small jobs (and in fact, embraces them) and can support you with your day-to-day needs, is incredibly important in this industry. We have an amazingly talented team of designers and developers here, but one of the biggest contributing factors to our success throughout the pandemic came down to the simple fact that we were able to make our clients’ lives easier during an incredibly stressful time. Q. How has the Emerson Ward team grown or changed over the past 7 years? A. We’ve certainly matured quite a bit. When I launched Emerson Ward, it was just me and the network of communications, PR, web, and consulting professionals I had built over my time working in-house at a few larger asset management firms. I was confident in my design abilities and understood the needs of our clients, but I had to learn how to sell and effectively deliver those services on the fly. As our client roster grew and the workload increased, I knew from experience that working with freelancers on one-off projects or farming out design or web development services to cheaper, overseas options just doesn’t work in our world. I needed good, full-time, in-person designers that were willing to learn and focus their skills on the unique needs of our clients. We hired our first full-time employee in early 2020 and have quickly grown to the eight-person team we are now, with a five-person design group, full-time web development support, and a dedicated client relationship manager. Q. What are your biggest hopes for the next 7 years? A. First and foremost, to continue to grow Emerson Ward into an exciting, challenging, welcoming workplace for our employees. They’ll always come first and I’m proud to say we’ve had zero turnover since we started hiring. I’d like to keep it that way. More broadly, I want to continue to build our skillset and service offerings (we’re already making good strides here with our new video service.) Making sure we’re viewed as the creative partner of choice for everyone operating in or around the asset management industry is an ongoing goal. I truly believe we have a better understanding of our clients’ day-to-day needs than anyone else operating in this space and have the creative talent and technical skills to execute on any project. Whether you’re just launching a new fund and need a website or logo, or managing marketing operations for a large asset manager and just need some extra design muscle at quarter-e

September 23, 2022PowerPoint Tips for Hedge FundsThere are 30 million PowerPoint presentations created around the world every day. As a creative services agency focused on the asset management industry, we’ve built and reviewed our fair share of that number. While building and updating pitchbooks and client presentations can feel like a never-ending task for hedge fund marketing managers, there are a few things you can do to simplify the process and ensure a professional-looking presentation. Integrate your data sources: Hedge fund presentations are data rich. Using the data integration tools in PowerPoint will help you seamlessly integrate data from Excel and other sources and reduce the likelihood of reporting errors. Pro Tip: Integration can be tricky, when in doubt get expert advice from a creative services partner or IT vendor.Be consistent with tables: Using a consistent design and treating content the same way across all tables in a presentation will make the information easier to consume. You can set up a table style to handle font, size, and colors before building or importing any tables into a presentation. Pro Tip: If you need to resize an entire table in PowerPoint, hit the Shift key and drag the white resizing dot to ensure that everything in the table resizes equally.Alignments matter: Using the Alignment tool will ensure your objects are properly aligned on your slide, giving your presentation a polished and professional look. Pro Tip: The Alignment tool has two key settings, Align to Slide and Align Selected Objects. We recommend Align Selected Objects. Here are some helpful tips from Microsoft.Turn on Guides and Gridlines: Guides (horizontal and vertical center lines) and Gridlines (a grid of lines across the entire slide) are a great feature to help you align items on a slide that are not associated with another object.Use fonts appropriately: Stick to your brand’s core fonts and hierarchy of information. Titles, headings, text boxes and tables should be consistent across the presentation to help readers subconsciously process and categorize information. Pro Tip: We recommend no more than 2-3 fonts and 2-4 type sizes.Don’t forget the Slide Master: While setting up a Slide Master takes time and planning; it is worth it in the long run. Consistency and branding are key in developing an impactful presentation. The Slide Master makes it easier to maintain both across a presentation regardless of how many people are editing.Whether it's reviewing content or building a new deck, PowerPoint skills are a necessity for anyone in asset management. We believe that PowerPoint has become a powerful tool that can help firms showcase their brands and unique perspective. Recently we shared our love for PowerPoint and its constantly evolving feature set. Contact us if you would like to learn more.Want to be notified when it’s available? May 29, 2024Say Cheese? Headshot Tips for Asset Management FirmsHeadshots send a message to the world. They offer insight into you, your personality, your brand, and ultimately your firm. Like anything related to the brand identify of your firm, they require careful thought and planning.Whether your photographer utters the iconic “say cheese” expression or not depends on the tone and style of head shots you want for your firm. We’ve spent time over the years helping firms determine the best headshot style for their organization. Here are a few tips.Go ProFirst and foremost, work with a professional photographer. It matters. They will bring consistency to the headshots and are experts at putting people at ease to capture the best possible images. While there is a lot of hype about AI photo creation, it fails to capture the authenticity and essence of a person, and no one wants their team to look artificial.Think BrandingBefore any images are taken, work with your photographer and brand team to ensure that the look and feel of the headshots is in line with your brand identity. Your brand identity is about more than font types and colors. Your team’s headshots should be an extension of your brand.Select a Style The biggest branding/style mistake you can make is not having one. Do you want to convey trust, approachability, your fresh thinking or reinforce your focus on ESG? When consulting with your photographer, have a vision in mind to start the conversation. For example, we want to highlight our firm’s half-a-century history of delivering exceptional results through conservative investment strategies. Where your headshots are taken (inside or out, against a formal backdrop, or a brick wall etc…) is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. This will not only dictate the setting of the photos, but the finer details as well. Will they be in black and white or color? What, if any, editing will the photographer do? Will people be standing or sitting (or both)? Is the dress code business casual or more formal?Keep it ConsistentWhile it might seem obvious, everyone needs to have the same headshot style. Asking a photographer to edit a photo that someone took on their iPhone in their backyard to look like a professional image won’t work. Think of it like picture day at school. Everyone selects their preferred outfit, but there is no mistaking that this is a team, and the photos were taken purposefully. What to WearWorried about what to wear? You aren’t alone! There’s a lot of advice out there, but we prefer to keep it simple. After all, if you feel relaxed and confident during the photoshoot, you will look better in the pictures. Follow the general guidance from your firm (business casual etc…) and: Wear colors and styles that suit you and make you feel confident. If pale colors wash your skin tone out, don’t wear them. If you have a go-to power suit that gives you an extra boost of confidence grab it. Your photo should be a reflection of you and your personality within the brand of your firm.Avoid clashing patterns and colors. Patterns are okay in small doses, just don’t overdo it.Keep accessories (scarves, jewelry, pins, hats etc…) to a minimum. The headshot is about you, we need to see your face.Hair styling and make-up should give the overall impression of being put together, not over the top or like you are headed to a gala event. Bonus tip: If appropriate, try standing up for some of the headshots. There’s more energy in your posture when standing that will translate to the pictures.Want to be notified when it’s available? December 7, 2022Six Signs You Should Call a Design ProfessionalWhether you are launching a new fund or celebrating the 10th anniversary of your firm, it can be challenging to know when to engage creative partners. The key for any firm is to engage with creative professionals when strategic design advice can set you up for growth and improve your image versus saving you from bad design choices that negatively impact your reputation and professionalism. But how do you know where that sweet spot is?Over the years we have identified a few triggers that typically make our phone ring. Here are six signs you should reach out to a creative services agency.Things look a little messy/stale/plain/boring: If your logo or the graphics on your website, or your pitchbook look a little off, it’s likely time to give the professionals a call. Of all the triggers, this one is the hardest to define, because it is more of a gut feeling than a moment in time. If your look at your content and aren’t excited or don’t feel that it accurately reflects your brand, then trust your gut, it’s probably time for an update. It’s been a while: If all you’ve done for the few years is update staff changes and copyright information on your website, it's time to call a creative services agency. Every 5 years it’s worth fully evaluating your visual identity including logo, website design and performance, presentation templates, and other marketing materials. Things are getting unmanageable: Constantly editing your content templates to fit in new information? Tired of using that same stock image repeatedly in your collateral? Whether it’s a pitchbook template or a sales presentation, too many edits and/or not enough variety are sure signs you need design help. You’re experiencing rapid or significant growth, or raising new funds: When starting, some funds can make it work with a simple presentation deck, logo, and website. Once you hit an AUM of $500 m - $1B, it is time to engage professional designers. Another key trigger is the launch of a new fund or strategy or the start of fundraising efforts. You’re blending in with the crowd: If what makes your firm unique isn’t immediately apparent on your website or in your collateral it’s time to connect with design professionals. Today’s hyper-competitive marketplace means you can’t afford to blend in.Your website performance is poor: Ideally, you want to engage before your website stops working, but if your website performance plummets or is no longer mobile-optimized, it’s time to call a creative services agency. It only takes a few seconds to make a bad digital impression.Want to be notified when it’s available? Sign up below:NameFirmEmail AddressThank you! Your submission has been received!Oops! October 8, 2024Size Doesn't MatterOne of the most frequent assumptions we run into when speaking with prospective clients is that you have to be a big firm to work with a design agency. As an agency whose current client list runs from very small to very large firms, we can confidently say that’s a myth.Simply put, the size of your firm or company doesn’t matter -- everyone can work with a design agency. After all, the power of good design is beneficial to organizations of all sizes and bad design costs everyone. What does matter however, is what you bring to the table.Building an image and brand or strengthening an existing one takes expertise. It’s also a collaborative effort. Here are a few tips for setting yourself up for success with a design agency regardless of your size: Bring Examples: Providing your design partner examples of what you like and what you don’t like is a great way to get conversations going and establish goals. Showing instead of telling can significantly speed up the design process.Ask Questions: Ask for clarifications on any part of the project or timeline that doesn’t make sense. If you aren’t sure about a design element, ask for background.Trust: Trusting the expertise of your agency team leads to more creative ideas. Providing direction and brand oversight is key, but being open to new ideas can help the design team push boundaries and be more innovative for your firm.Communicate Clearly: Be specific about the needs, expectations and goals of a project. Collate feedback from multiple people/groups and use a single point of contact for communications. Provide positive and negative feedback, both are helpful.Collaborate: Think of your design agency as a strategic team member. Involving them early in discussions, and empowering them with critical market research or customer insights will lead to more innovative and effective design work. The most successful design partnerships come from good collaboration, not the size of your firm or creativity of the agency. Effective collaboration, trust and clear communication puts design expertise within reach for firms of all sizes.Want to be notified when it’s available? Sign up below:NameFirmEmail AddressThank you! October 24, 2023The 2023 Adweek List of Fastest Growing Agencies: A Q&A with our FounderIn honor of being named to the 2023 Adweek List of Fastest Growing Agencies (read more here), we sat down with Emerson Ward Founder and Creative Director Brian Ward to discuss the agency, design trends in asset management, and more.Q. Has your vision for Emerson Ward changed since you founded the agency 7+ years ago?A. We’ve always been focused on steady, measured growth. Now, witnessing that growth firsthand is amazing. We’ve built a great team that delivers high-quality work and exceptional service. We’ve also expanded our service offerings to include video production, web and PDF accessibility services, and more. One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the opportunity to work with some incredible clients. They’ve made the past 7+ years amazing and have pushed us to do more than I ever could have imagined. It’s because of them that we’re in the position we’re in now. Q. How has your perspective on design in the asset management industry changed over the years? A. There’s always been a real, often overlooked need in our world for day-to-day graphic and marketing support. Firms will always need help updating pitch books, building websites, and creating high-quality content. That hasn’t changed in the 20 years I’ve been in this industry. What has changed is clients’ attitudes towards design and creative support. They understand now more than ever that their brand and how they present their firm to the world matters. They know how difficult it can be to update fund collateral and maintaining a website, and more and more, they’re understanding the value of a good, knowledgeable partner that can provide these services. Q. You called out the outstanding work of the Emerson Ward team in the award announcement. What do you look for when building the Emerson Ward team?A. We’re a very tight-nit team, and supporting our clients is a team effort, so finding the right person always takes priority over hiring for a specific skill set. We’re fortunate to live and work in an area that’s loaded with great creative talent, so when we’re adding headcount, we look for individuals that work hard, communicate well, and are passionate about taking on new challenges.Q. What’s one thing you wish people knew about Emerson Ward? A. How much of an asset we can be to a firm. We’re so much more than a typical design agency. We’re a day-to-day resource for all their marketing operations, graphic, and creative needs. We can update your pitch books, manage your website, help with communications, and so much more. Q. You were among the smallest agencies on the Adweek List. What’s the biggest benefit to working with a smaller creative agency?A. Smaller (and mighty) agencies like Emerson Ward aren’t nameless, faceless factories that churn out generic design work. Our clients get to know their designers, and our team approach means we can be incredibly responsive to their needs. When working with Emerson Ward, you don’t submit a ticket and wait for a response, you speak directly with the people that will be doing the work for you. Q. Looking ahead, where do you see the agency this time next year?A. Hopefully on the 2024 list! Growth always brings new and exciting challenges. We’re currently adding headcount to help expand our services and capabilities. We are also refining our approach to client service and project management, and exploring new services, partnerships, and resources to better serve our clients.Click here to read the press release. October 26, 2022The Anatomy of a Hedge Fund Pitch Book: Part Three, Design TipsOver the past two weeks, we’ve been analyzing one of the most powerful tools in a hedge fund marketer’s toolkit – the pitchbook. In part one we broke down the qualitative elements that should make up the first half of the document. In part two, we examined best practices for the quantitative or more concrete data-heavy aspects of the document. Now, it’s time to look at our favorite topic – design.Creating an engaging and compelling document is a marriage between good content and good design. Maintaining good design across several pitchbooks can be a challenge as edits are common over time. However, it is a necessity if you want to make the best possible impression for your firm. To help, we have developed a set of design tips, tricks, and recommendations to help you create and maintain visually stunning pitchbooks and highlight your brand to potential clients. Section Five: Overall Design TipsFrom color selection to font, there are a variety of design decisions that need to be made and maintained to ensure your content is easy to consume. Keep it consistent: No matter the font, colors, or size, ensure that it is consistent across the entire pitchbook. Lack of consistency across the basic elements of style is perhaps the biggest design mistake we see. Pro tip: Use the slide master to set and maintain the basic structure of your slides.Use fonts appropriately: Use standard PowerPoint fonts whenever possible (your brand guidelines should specify acceptable fonts for use in Microsoft Office applications) and hierarchy of information. Titles, headings, text boxes, and tables should be consistent across the presentation to help readers subconsciously process and categorize information. Pro Tip: We recommend no more than 1-2 fonts and 2-4 type sizes.Hierarchy matters: Set or use a hierarchy of information. Maintaining a hierarchy of information is like providing a guide for your readers. A hierarchy of information relates to how you treat various types of content. Headlines, subheadings, table headings, text you want to highlight etc…. should always have the same font and size. This lets the reader subconsciously know where to start reading and what is the most important content on the slide.Alignments matter: Using the Alignment tool will ensure your objects are properly aligned on your slide, giving your presentation a polished and professional look. Pro Tip: The Alignment tool has two key settings, Align to Slide and Align Selected Objects. We recommend Align Selected Objects. Here are some helpful tips from Microsoft.Turn on Guides and Gridlines: Guides (horizontal and vertical center lines) and Gridlines (a grid of lines across the entire slide) are great features that help you align items on a slide that are not associated with another object. We like to set up our grids and guidelines before we begin the design process, so we have a basic structure that flows throughout every slide in the pitchbook.Keep it simple. Readers don’t engage with walls of text. It is better to have less content on each slide that is easy to find and consume than lots of content no one pays attention to. Unsure of what simple means? Ask yourself:Is the content visually overwhelming? Limit the number of font sizes, typefaces, and colors. Use these only to highlight important messages and features and maintain a strict hierarchy of information. The same is true for animations, slide transitions, and imagery. You don’t want to overwhelm readers with information overload. Integrate data sources: Hedge fund presentations are data-rich. Using the data integration tools in PowerPoint will help you seamlessly integrate data from Excel and other sources and reduce the likelihood of reporting errors. Pro Tip: Integration can be tricky, when in doubt get expert advice from a creative services partner or IT vendor.Color inside the lines: Stick to your brand colors. A pitchbook is not the place to get creative with color selections. If you don’t have a brand guide, speak with a designer or creative service agency, and have one created. Keep like elements (headlines, highlights, quotes etc…) the same color across the document. Size of the slides: Widescreen (16:9) format or standard 8.5”x11”? We get this question frequently. There are several advantages to the widescreen format, but most investors still want the option to print these documents. If you’re presenting in person to a large group, it may make sense to have a widescreen version created, but generally we recommend using standard US Letter format, or A4 for pitchbooks used outside the US. Section Six: Data Heavy SlidesOne of the elements that make a pitchbook so effective is the use of data and in-depth information about your portfolio. While critical, data-heavy slides can also be challenging to display, here are a few tips to help ensure your key points shine through.Be consistent with tables: Using a cons

October 13, 2022The Anatomy of a Hedge Fund Pitch Book: Part TwoIn last week’s post, we walked through the qualitative elements that exist in the first half of standard hedge fund pitchbooks. This week, we’re digging into the second half of the document – the 8-10 slides that provide the concrete details, statistics, and information on how you’ve constructed your portfolio, how it’s performed relative to the benchmark, and how to invest. These slides are your closing argument. They give you the opportunity to show your work and prove your investment thesis while providing potential investors with the data needed to evaluate your strategy.Section Three: Making your Case This section provides the tactical information and data that allows potential investors to fully understand how you’ve built and manage your portfolio. It includes investment guidelines, a current breakdown of the portfolio, and a comprehensive look at your approach to risk management.Portfolio Construction On this slide, you’ll explain the targets and guidelines used to construct your portfolio. It’s the blueprint you follow when investing that provides a clear overview of the portfolio’s structure. Key statistics to include are: number of positions (usually an acceptable range), target gross and net exposure, position sizing, position limits, expected holding periods, other info that describes the technical aspects of your investment approach. Portfolio CharacteristicsNow that you’ve laid out how you’ve built your portfolio, it’s time to share the details. The Portfolio Characteristics slide provides a statistical breakdown of your current portfolio - the information investors need to understand how you’ve deployed capital. These stats should include number of holdings, top 10 long/short holdings, sector and regional allocations, average market cap, and any other details needed to describe the contents of your portfolio. Risk Management The Risk Management portion of your Pitchbook can be divided into two sections – Portfolio Risk and Operational Risk. Portfolio Risk describes the general risk management guardrails deployed at the portfolio management level. This includes maximum position sizes, industry exposure, losses per position, and your approach to hedging. It can also include concentration limitations and an overview of internal stress testing. Operational Risk describes the firmwide steps your organization takes to mitigate risk. This includes overviews of relevant firmwide policies and formal procedures such as disaster recovery policies, business continuity plans and a code of ethics. Administrative risk controls should also be outlined here. This includes pricing and valuation policies, trade, position and cash reconciliations, relationships with regulators, and a list of the service providers who support the day-to-day operations of your fund.Tip: The slides in section three are full of quantitative, straightforward information. As a result, they tend to be a bit dry visually. Working with a professional designer to create easy-to-read tables, engaging charts, and attractive graphics will help readers better navigate these slides. Section Four: Your Closing ArgumentNow that you’ve provided a full rundown of your firm, investment strategy, and portfolio, it’s time to make your closing argument. This section demonstrates how your strategy has performed in the real-world and provides potential investors with any additional information they’ll need to invest. PerformanceWhether you have a long and distinguished track record or you’re just getting started, you’ll want to provide potential investors with an indicator of how well your strategy has performed against its respective benchmark. At a minimum, a six-month view of monthly, annual, and YTD returns since inception should be provided. If the information is available, you can also include performance since inception, indexed to $100 to show the growth of a potential investment over time. All performance numbers should be audited by a third party if possible.Tip: If you don’t have a performance history, backtested, hypothetical performance may be included, provided it’s properly disclosed (always discuss this with your legal/compliance support). Summary Terms The Summary Terms slide is arguably the simplest, yet important slide in your pitchbook. It provides the practical information investors need to know before investing in your fund. It should include:the Investment Manager’s full legal name, management and incentive fee information, minimum investment amounts, lockup information, liquidity terms, indicate whether there’s a high-water mark, list of service providers supporting the operations of the fund. Contact InfoThe Contact Us page is another straightforward slide investors have come to expect in standard hedge fund pitchbooks. It should include names, email addresses, and phone numbers of key client relations and/or business development personnel, along with general conta

October 3, 2022The Anatomy of a Hedge Fund Pitchbook: Part OneHere at Emerson Ward, the most frequently asked questions we receive when discussing a hedge fund pitchbook design project with a new or prospective client center around content and structure: How many slides are too many? What content should be included? What’s the difference between “Philosophy” and “Strategy”? The answers always vary – each presentation will be unique to your strategy, firm, audience, and where you are in the fundraising lifecycle – but generally, these presentations all share the same DNA; a basic structure and flow designed to succinctly explain a complex investment offering. In this three-part series, we’ll break down the individual elements that live in every hedge fund pitchbook and guide you through the basic content you should include when crafting your fund’s pitchbook. We’ll also discuss design fundamentals, PowerPoint basics, and provide you with some tips and tricks to help you stand out in a crowded field. In part one of the series, we’ll start with the more qualitative elements that make up the first half of your fund pitchbook, where you’ll set the stage for your prospects, introduce yourself, and break down what makes your strategy unique. Part two will tackle the quantitative aspects and part three, design. Deck? Presentation? Pitch Book? (Pitchbook?) Now before we dive in (and before the naming police come after us), let’s be clear – none of these terms are incorrect, and all can be used interchangeably to refer to the collection of slides used to explain the important aspects of your strategy to potential investors. We hear “pitchbook” most often, but no matter what you call it a good pitchbook should be:No more than 18-24 core slides (unless you have a complex strategy). Unique to your firm, audience and, where you are in the fundraising lifecycle.Reflect the complexity of your strategy and unique selling points.Professionally designed, polished, without grammatical errors, and aesthetically pleasing. To be impactful your pitchbook needs to stand out among the piles of printed materials and overloaded inboxes investors and consultants deal with every day. That’s no easy task and requires a thoughtful mix of structure, content, and design. Section One: Setting the StageThe opening section of the pitchbook generally consists of 5-6 slides that serve as the opening of your story. It’s your opportunity to grab investors’ attention, highlight your unique strengths, and lay the groundwork for what’s to come.Cover PageRemember, first impressions matter. Do not overlook the cover page, it’s your opening statement and it should be impactful. When crafting a cover page, approach it the same way you would your wardrobe choices. It should be professional, clean, tailored to your firm’s brand, and stand out in all the right ways.Whether you decide to include an image or not, make sure it does include, at a minimum, your logo and firm colors, the name of your fund and the fund management company, and the “as-of” date. We also recommend including a “Presented to:” field to give it a personalized touch when delivering it to your prospects.DisclaimerThe disclaimers that appear at the front of your pitchbook contain information that must be included in your pitchbook. It may seem like they don’t vary from pitchbook to pitchbook, so you may be tempted to copy this from another and drop it into your own - Don’t do it! Have it drafted and reviewed by your attorney before distribution and periodically have them review it to ensure it stays up to date. Table of ContentsThis one may seem straightforward, and it generally is. But don’t forget, these slides usually have real estate to spare, so why not add a little substance to your table of contents slides? Do you have a company mission? A great story behind the name of your firm? Add it here as a “soft opening” to your pitchbook.Tip: Don’t forget to regularly update your table of contents. Updates to your pitchbook may cause the order of your slides to change, or you may need to add or remove slides. Make a note to update the Table of Contents slide whenever changes are made and check it periodically for accuracy. Executive SummaryWe recommend adding an Executive Summary slide at the beginning of each pitchbook that provides a succinct overview of the contents of the pitchbook. The Executive Summary should be in table form and contain a sentence or two on your:StrategyInvestment ObjectivesPortfolio Manager’s ExperienceTrack Record (if available)Edge (a unique approach, market opportunity; risk management, etc.)Alignment of Interests (if applicable). Introduce Your Key Team MembersNext up is a “bio” slide that introduces key members of the portfolio management team - the PMs and Analysts that will directly contribute to your fund’s performance. Note, this is not the space for lengthy bios or professional headshots, those go in the Appendix. This slide should include names, titles

February 26, 2025The Art of Pitchbook HousekeepingThe first quarter is the perfect time to review and refresh your pitchbook template and content! The first quarter is the perfect time to review and refresh your pitchbook template and content. But it’s not just the quantitative and qualitative data that needs updating. Pitchbook housekeeping should also include a review of your template design to ensure your visual identity is still accurate and clear. While software can quickly automate the data updates, ensuring that your design and messaging still meets your brand guidelines requires a human eye. To help, here are our five suggestions for your 2025 pitchbook housekeeping project:Move beyond the numbers: While the focus of pitchbooks is on performance, qualitative data is also key to making a good impression. Don’t forget to update (either manually or automated) firm tenure, years in the industry, new professional designations or certifications, promotions and new titles, and new hires or staffing changes. Spotlight growth and achievements: A pitchbook clean-up is the perfect time to highlight key milestones, firm growth, and achievements from the previous year. Don’t be shy, make sure you include notable new partnerships, market expansions, new product launches, awards, leadership changes and new firm capabilities or services.Reset design elements: From a heading font size that was decreased to a chart legend in the wrong color, small changes to branding can occur throughout the year. Pitchbook housekeeping is the perfect time to reset your template and ensure your visual identity is accurate. If needed engage your design team or partners to handle this phase of the housekeeping project.Make it picture perfect: If your pitchbook includes any photographs or images of your team, make sure they are still current. Add in any new headshots (a good thing to do every couple of years) and make sure all the people highlighted in images are still working at the firm.Dive into the details: With a cleanup there will likely be small changes throughout the pitchbook template. At the end of the process make sure you review the “small stuff.” Small changes such as copyright year, privacy statements, firm address, page numbers, URLs etc. are necessary but often overlooked.Your pitchbook is your calling card, and making sure it sends the right message is essential. July 3, 2025The Business Benefits of Website Privacy Policies We are digging deeper into why your website’s privacy policy isn’t just a regulatory checkmark, but a smart move for your firm’s growth.Recently, we’ve been exploring the importance of website privacy policies. In part one, we reviewed the basics, why they are important, what they do, and how you can get started. Now, we are digging deeper into why your website’s privacy policy isn’t just a regulatory checkmark, but a smart move for your firm’s growth. With state, national and global regulations, a website privacy policy is essential if you are collecting any type of information. But that’s just part of the story. The time and resources spent on establishing and sharing your policy is also a good business investment. In fact, a recent study by Cisco found that companies earned an average 1.8% return on investment from privacy-related expenditures. Let’s explore the real and very relevant business advantages of having a privacy policy.Building & Maintaining Trust: In the investment world, trust is your currency. A privacy policy is a clear signal to your prospects, clients, and partners that you value and protect their data. It helps maintain trust and is a tangible reminder of your firm’s integrity. And that matters -- nearly 80% of US adults are concerned about how companies use their data (Pew Research Center) and 33% of users have cut ties with companies because of privacy concerns (Cisco). Risk Mitigation: A well-crafted privacy policy isn’t just proactive; its protective. It can minimize misunderstandings and disputes that could lead to legal action. In the event something does go wrong, having a transparent, up-to-date policy demonstrates that your firm took reasonable steps, which could limit your liability.Credibility & Authority: Having a privacy policy positions your firm as an established business and an authority in your space. It shows that you’re operating with structure, foresight, and integrity. SEO Boost: Having a privacy policy sends a more authoritative and credible signal to Google, Bing, and other search engine bots that are indexing websites. While it’s not a direct ranking factor, a privacy policy adds to your site’s overall authority and trustworthiness, two important signals search engines use when deciding ranking.Better Data Management: Creating or editing a privacy policy forces organizations to think through how data is collected, used, and stored. This important exercise often uncovers opportunities to tighten practices, improve security, and become more intentional about the data firms have and need.Improved Marketing Efforts: Data-driven marketing efforts are essential to cut through the noise in today’s busy marketplace. Having a privacy policy is the first step to ethical data collection and builds a strong foundation for future marketing efforts. Website privacy policies are about more than just meeting regulatory responsibilities. They are powerful tools that can help you build a stronger, more credible and profitable business. If you are ready to transform your website into a growth engine for your firm, let’s talk.Want to be notified when it’s available? Sign up below:NameFirmEmail AddressThank you! September 13, 2022Tips for Building a Mobile-Friendly Asset Management WebsiteRecently we explored the business, technology and human factors driving the increased importance of mobile-optimized websites for asset management firms. Now that we’ve explored why mobile-friendly websites are vital, let’s continue the conversation with a few how-to tips and considerations.Ensuring your content looks good and is easy to read, use and navigate on a small screen is not as simple as modifying font size. From how content appears and responds to graphic load times, color contrast and navigation there is a lot to consider. Remember the goal with mobile site design is to make information easy to consume. With that in mind, here are a few tips for building a mobile-friendly asset management website:1. Use responsive design. This means that your website will automatically adjust to fit the screen size of whatever device it's being viewed on. Don’t forget, Google Analytics can tell you the device type your visitors are using allowing you to optimize for that screen size in the design.2. Keep it simple. Mobile users won’t scroll through a lot of text or images to find what they're looking for. It is better to have less content that is easy to find and consume than lots of content no one pays attention to. Unsure of what simple means? Ask yourself:Can you get to where you need to in 2-3 clicks? Anything more and you will lose your audience. No one has time to click that much on a mobile device. Is there a clear way for people to get to the essential information on your site? Establish an intuitive and straight forward path to the most important action or information. Is the content visually overwhelming? Limit the number of font sizes, typefaces, and colors. Use these only to highlight important messages and features and maintain a strict hierarchy of information. The same is true for animations, visual effects, and imagery. You don’t want to overwhelm visitors or slow down the site. 3. Use large, easy-to-read fonts. Mobile users don't want to have to zoom in to read your content. The minimum font size is typically 16px, but that can vary slightly based on the font.4. Make it easy to click & type: Ensure your buttons and links are easy/big enough to click and standout from a design perspective. Touch screens are less reliable than a mouse and/or keyboard in registering a click, so size matters on mobile. For text entry -- less is more. When you are typing with your thumb while holding a coffee and walking across the street you don’t want to input your entire email address. Limiting form field entries to essential information and having autofill and pre-formatted options is helpful to users. 5. Manage the menu: The desktop version of your site likely includes complex header images and multiple menu and submenu options. The smaller screen size of mobile devices demands a different approach. The “hamburger” icon is widely used and the simplest menu option. If you have multiple submenus think about how and where on screen they appear. Most sites will use a slide out submenu, however there are other options depending on the complexity of your site.6. Think SEO: Your Search Engine Optimization is positively impacted if your site is mobile optimized. For even better user experience, ensuring your site is SEO indexed will allow users on mobile devices to be sent the correct mobile links to use. While this may seem like a lot to think about, these are just our top tips! Remember in today’s competitive marketplace with rising consumer expectations seeping into business one of the biggest mistakes you can make is not thinking about mobile-friendly design. A conversation with your IT team and/or creative services agency is a good place to start – good luck!Want to be notified when it’s available? Sign up below:NameFirmEmail AddressThank you! September 15, 2023To Scroll or Not to ScrollThis week, we are continuing our series on website design for asset management firms by exploring this popular (and sometimes hotly contested) design question – to scroll or not to scroll.Scrolling has been a mainstay on websites for decades so it may seem like an odd debate to be having. However, mobile technology and advances in website development are pushing what’s possible and popular for website design and raising everyone’s expectations. Ensuring that your website makes a positive first impression for your firm is key. Let’s get into the debate. The pros of scrollingSmooth scrolling (where the site slides down smoothly and slowly as you navigate) gives your site a luxurious and sophisticated feel. It automatically elevates your content and your brand image without saying a word. If you want to create an immersive storyline for your firm, scrolling is an excellent tool to help. With scrolling, your brand story can have a clear beginning, middle and end on one page. This allows visitors to take in the entire story without the break in concentration or focus that happens when clicking to another page to continue.Scrolling is faster than clicking, enabling visitors to view more information without waiting for new pages to load. It also allows visitors to quickly scan content to find what they are looking for.Website access on mobile devices continuing to grow across industries, making the mobile benefits of scrolling a powerful consideration. Scrolling is ideal for mobile users. It makes for simple navigation and ease of content viewing. Knowing what device your firm’s website visitors are using is important information to have when making decisions about scrolling. The cons of scrollingExcessive scrolling can lead to frustration and shorter view times if visitors can’t find what they are looking for on your site. Complex scrolling can also disorient users and make navigation difficult which also results in shorter view times and unhappy clients and prospects. With a site that scrolls, load times may be slower given that your browser will continuously be trying to load new content. Slower load times have a negative impact on SEO and frustrate visitors. Sites listed on the first page of Google search results, have an average page load speed of 1.65 seconds.Infinite scrolling without any break points can cause issues for screen readers as they cannot understand the structure/context of the content. In addition, if there aren’t any ways to navigate the site using a keyboard, accessibility of your content to all visitors will be an issue. As mentioned above, slow loading websites may also have a negative impact on your SEO score. In addition, content that is tucked away on a long page makes it difficult for the SEO bots to find, determine its relevance and then rank your page accordingly. To Scroll or not to Scroll? Our verdict:The answer is not one-size-fits-all and needs to be carefully considered. Your firm’s decision about scrolling should be made based on your content, story and audience. We recommend taking the time to think and plan with your team or creative agency about your website. Understanding your audience, having clear and concise content, and knowing the brand image you want to create are essential to answering this question for your firm. Remember the goal of good website design is determining the action you want visitors to take and then mapping out how to get visitors to accomplish that task with the least amount of friction and in the least number of clicks.Still on the fence about scrolling? We can help. Reach out to discuss your site and the pros and cons of scrolling (and maybe even a few alternatives).Want to be notified when it’s available? March 29, 2023Videos & Asset Management MarketingToday we launched a new video production service at Emerson Ward. From firm introductory videos to videos highlighting your perspective on fund performance or brag reels for recruitment, we now offer a full set of video production, training, and consulting capabilities. This is an exciting moment for our growing agency, and we are proud to be expanding the services we offer to you. Why now?Videos are ubiquitous in our daily lives. People watch 1 billion hours of videos on YouTube every day*. While video adoption in asset management marketing has been slower, we are at an important turning point in our industry. Video is a powerful way to communicate with clients and prospects and is becoming an expected medium in our industry as well. A recent study shows an 11% yearly increase in the number of top firms using YouTube.** We believe that number will continue to grow. How video can helpYour sales process is driven by a story. The more engaging that story is, the stronger the connection you build with prospects and clients. Humans love stories and storytelling, and video is the most powerful medium for corporate storytelling. It creates a connection or familiarity that words and images cannot. It’s also a great way to put a human face to your firm, explain complex topics, and build rapport/relationships.Whether you’re raising funds or growing your client base, informative, professionally produced video content will drive engagement. It will also save your prospects from having to read yet another commentary or whitepaper, helping you stand out from the competition and likely improving retention of your messaging. The time is nowThe launch of our professional video production and management services is designed to help your firm cut through the noise and differentiate your brand. With three types of offerings — full video production, consulting/training, and editing—we are here to help. If you haven’t considered video in your marketing mix yet, this is a great time to start. If it is already a mainstay in your marketing tool kit let’s talk about how we can help you make an even bigger impact. For more information, visit our video services pageClick here to read the press release.* https://www.comparitech.com/tv-streaming/youtube-statistics/** Peregrine Global 100 Study 2022Want to be notified when it’s available? August 29, 2022We love PPT and you should tooWe’ve sat in the audience staring at poorly designed slides and we’ve experienced the pitfalls of every plan, idea and document in business being turned into a slide deck. While frustrating and at times painful, that’s just one side of the PowerPoint (or PPT as fans call it) story. The truth is we love PPT and we aren’t afraid to show it. From 80s fashion trends to sitcom reunions, everything old is new again and PPT is no exception. Launched in 1987, the software has been a mainstay on the corporate landscape for decades. But that doesn’t mean its capabilities are stuck in the past. PPT’s extensive and constantly evolving feature set is one of the biggest reasons we’ve fallen back in love with it. We design a lot of presentation templates for hedge funds, private equity, and other asset management firms and our team is still discovering new capabilities. Whether its image filters or slide master features, the design and graphic capabilities have come a long way in the last decade. PPT is no longer just for putting bullets on a page. Not convinced? Here are a few of our favorite capabilities in PPT. Intuitive image editing: From adding texture to a graphic to using filters to make diverse pictures look the same, PPT has powerful yet intuitive image editing capabilities. Data Integration: It’s simple to link data from Excel into charts or graphics. Once that link is made, when you update the data in Excel, your slide is automatically updated.Dual Purpose: Everything you produce is dual purpose and ready for screen or print. No fancy adjustments or conversions needed. Our love for PPT has grown over time and now it’s one of our favorite tools. Our suggestion? Give the software a second glance and you might fall in love with it again too. Want to be notified when it’s available? Sign up below:NameFirmEmail AddressThank you! December 16, 2022Website Accessibility and Asset Management FirmsWhether it is the recent rise in website accessibility lawsuits (they hit an all-time high in 2021)* or the emergence of new tech solutions to help businesses address concerns, website accessibility is generating a lot of discussion. And for good reason. There are one billion people around the world who have some form of disability.** Ensuring that the web remains accessible to all is the responsibility of everyone who creates content – asset management firms included. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Canada’s Human Rights Act, and the European Union’s Web Accessibility Directive outline accessibility requirements for all websites. Asset management firms are no different from any other business when it comes to meeting these requirements. In the US, businesses must comply with ADA legislation if they have more than 15 employees. In addition, some states have related laws. If you have a website, accessibility should be among the first things you think of when you design or build content. What is web accessibility?Web accessibility is the practice of ensuring there are no barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to websites by people with physical disabilities, situational disabilities, and socio-economic restrictions on bandwidth and speed.***A frequent misconception is that website accessibility only applies to people who are deaf or blind. Accessibility standards make it possible for people with a variety of disabilities to navigate and comprehend your content. We believe that accessibility standards improve websites and content for everyone while delivering significant business benefits.Stop for a moment and consider how your firm’s website would be perceived by someone who is color blind. Now imagine someone with dyslexia or someone that uses only a keyboard to navigate. What kind of impression would they have of your firm and services after visiting your website? The benefits of accessibility:Whether you are launching a hedge fund or have been around for decades, ensuring you are communicating effectively with the broadest possible audience is good business sense. But that’s just the beginning, website accessibility can help your firm: Enhance reputation: Offering an accessible website demonstrates your firm’s respect for your clients and community. It highlights your inclusivity and reinforces a commitment to outstanding client service.Increase conversions: Following accessibility guidelines makes your content easier to engage with. Better content means more conversions from your site to your digital channels or your sales team.Improve SEO results: Search engine ranking includes accessibility measurements. The more accessible your site is, the better your ranking will be.Avoid accessibility litigation: Failure to ensure your site is accessible opens your firm up to potential ADA accessibility litigation.Augment engagement: Content that is easier to consume gets read/viewed more by everyone. Take closed captioning as an example. Many people prefer to watch videos with captioning instead of or in addition to audio.Speed performance: Accessibility requires cleaner, more precise HTML code. Better code means faster load times giving visitors more time to learn about your firm.Getting Started:Ensuring your website meets accessibility standards can feel daunting, particularly if your firm has a complex site. In a subsequent post, we will explore some practical tips to assess your content. To start, we recommend two things. First, speak with your marketing/design team or partner and ask what accessibility standards were considered in the creation of your site. Then, run one of the free accessibility checkers (we love this one from Accessibility Checker: https://www.accessibilitychecker.org/) to understand how your website rates. *https://www.law.com/legaltechnews/2019/01/24/ada-lawsuits-are-on-the-rise-website-complaints-biggest-targets/?slreturn=20221114173031 https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/ada-title-iii-federal-lawsuit-filings-7822222/**https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/disability***https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_accessibilityWant to be notified when it’s available? They state that any website must be: Perceivable: Content and the user interface (UI) must be presented in a way that can be perceived.Operable: Navigation and the UI must be possible to accomplish.Understandable: People must be able to understand the content and how to operate the site. Robust: The site must maximize its compatibility with assistive technologies.Share this Post< Back to All Blog PostsPrevious Blog Post >No previous postNext blog Post >No next post
